NEW! LIFE'S HANDING YOU LEMONS, SO MAKE LEMONADE.
Maria seeks a director for The Lemon Tree, an exploration of love told through the experience of a Greek immigrant in the early 20th century. It's a music drama--neither a musical (the characters don't sing) nor an opera. The musicians (piano, clarinet/sax/flute, percussion and two vocalists) form a kind of Greek Chorus. They are an artificial element that deepens the action. There's both traditional Greek and original music. At pivotal moments the ensemble joins the musicians to expand the Greek Chorus. In the play we meet Dimitri and his family. Near-starvation forces Dimitri to leave his family. He suffers from afar the loss of his father to the massacre of Greeks in Smyrna and later the death of his mother. When he returns to Greece he marries Eleni, a young woman who loves novels, dancing and gardening. She is uprooted from her home by an arranged marriage. The ideal love that Dimitri hoped to recreate in his own marriage does not materialize. The couple are left in a relationship that is empty of love and empty of laughter. Qualities that would be most helpful in a Director: 1. Comfort with the world of movement, experience with choreography. 2. Imagination, ability to create a way to use the music and actors that's new. Integrate video, music and acting. 3. Comfort with music in an experimental setting. 4. Familiarity with Greece and Greek culture would be a plus. Oct-Nov 2009. Compersation: To be determined. Not an Actor's Equity production.
